The original photo can be seen Here I love...LOVE this photo. The time spent on making everything look so real is awesome. Each window has its own "glow" added to it. And the little light post is a really nice touch. Also notice the feint glow that comes out off the window in the door and the lantern outside. Those glows are what make these look so convincing in my opinion, and all it would take is a single layer with a glow color added to it, a working layer mode (probably multiply), and a blurry layer mask to hide everything but the glow.
Ultimately, the magic in photos like this rests in taking the time to make them correctly. It seems like too many people are out to make "quick edits with gimp," when editing a good image with gimp can take several hours to do.
